BoardWise Launches New Workflows for Disciplinary Relief and Investigative File Requests

    The BoardWise TeamOctober 19, 2026

For licensed professionals facing disciplinary proceedings, navigating the administrative system can be one of the most confusing and consequential experiences of their careers. The rules governing investigations, access to evidence, and public disciplinary records vary widely between states and licensing boards, often leaving professionals uncertain about their rights and the options available to them.

At BoardWise, we believe that understanding and navigating these procedures should not require extensive legal knowledge or substantial financial resources. That's why we're introducing two new workflows to the BoardWise platform: Disciplinary Relief Request and Investigative File Request.

These additions expand BoardWise's ability to support licensed professionals at different stages of the regulatory process, from understanding the evidence underlying an investigation to pursuing relief from disciplinary actions that may continue to affect their careers long after a matter has concluded.

A Pathway to Relief From Past Disciplinary Records

Professional discipline can have consequences that extend well beyond the original proceeding. A nurse who successfully completes probation, a therapist who fulfills the terms of a consent agreement, or another licensed professional who has demonstrated years of safe practice may nevertheless find that a disciplinary record continues to appear on licensing board websites and in online searches.

These records can affect employment opportunities, professional relationships, credentialing, and public perceptions, sometimes years or even decades after the underlying matter has been resolved.

What many professionals may not realize is that certain states provide mechanisms for seeking relief from these records. Depending on the jurisdiction, the type of disciplinary action, and the circumstances involved, professionals may be eligible to request sealing, expungement, removal from a licensing board's public website, or other forms of relief.

BoardWise's new Disciplinary Relief Request workflow helps professionals navigate these possibilities by preparing requests tailored to the relevant licensing authority and the relief being sought.

The availability of these remedies varies considerably. Some states impose waiting periods, require successful completion of disciplinary conditions, or limit relief to specific categories of violations. Other jurisdictions provide few or no mechanisms for removing disciplinary information from public view. Removal from a licensing board's website also does not necessarily mean that the underlying record has been expunged or that it cannot be disclosed through other channels.

Nevertheless, where relief is available, professionals deserve a practical means of understanding and pursuing it.

The purpose of this workflow is not to circumvent professional accountability or obscure information that must remain public under the law. Rather, it is to make existing administrative remedies more accessible to people who may otherwise never learn that those remedies exist.

Understanding the Evidence Behind an Investigation

The second new workflow, Investigative File Request, addresses a different but equally important issue: access to information during a licensing board investigation.

When a professional receives notice of a complaint or investigation, the correspondence may provide only a limited description of the allegations. The licensing board may have collected witness statements, documents, investigative reports, or other materials that the professional has not yet seen.

In some jurisdictions, professionals may be entitled to request certain investigative records before submitting their initial response. In others, access may arise later in the proceedings, be limited to particular categories of documents, or remain restricted by confidentiality requirements.

These distinctions matter. Preparing a meaningful response can be substantially more difficult when a professional does not fully understand the allegations or the evidence being considered.

The Investigative File Request workflow helps professionals prepare requests for records that may be available under the applicable laws and procedures of their jurisdiction. When disclosure is permitted, obtaining these materials can help clarify the circumstances surrounding a complaint, identify potential inaccuracies, and support a more informed response.

Access to investigative records is not guaranteed. Active investigations, confidentiality provisions, statutory exemptions, and other restrictions may limit what a board can disclose. Additionally, requesting records does not automatically pause or extend a deadline imposed by a licensing board. Professionals remain responsible for meeting applicable deadlines unless an extension is formally granted.

Even with these limitations, understanding when and how investigative information may be requested is an important part of navigating the administrative process.

    Making Administrative Procedures More Accessible

Occupational licensing affects millions of Americans working in healthcare, behavioral health, skilled trades, personal services, and many other fields. Yet the administrative processes governing professional discipline remain highly fragmented.

A procedure available to a nurse in one state may be unavailable to a nurse in another. Different licensing boards within the same state may operate under different statutes, regulations, and disclosure requirements. Navigating those differences can be particularly challenging for professionals who have never encountered the disciplinary system before.

BoardWise was founded to address this gap by making professional licensing procedures easier to understand and navigate.

With the addition of Disciplinary Relief Request and Investigative File Request, the platform is extending its capabilities beyond preparing responses to complaints and investigations. These workflows recognize that professionals may need procedural support before responding to allegations, throughout an investigation, and even years after a disciplinary matter has concluded.

They also reflect an important distinction between the existence of a legal or administrative right and a person's practical ability to exercise it. A procedure may be authorized by law, but if an individual does not know it exists or cannot understand how to initiate it, that opportunity may remain effectively inaccessible.

Technology can help narrow that gap by making procedural information more understandable and the preparation of administrative requests more manageable.

Continuing to Build a Fairer Licensing System

Professional licensing serves an essential public purpose, including protecting patients, consumers, and communities. At the same time, the procedures through which licensing authorities investigate allegations and maintain disciplinary records can have profound consequences for the individuals involved.

Fairness requires both meaningful public accountability and accessible procedures through which professionals can understand allegations, participate in proceedings, and pursue relief where permitted by law.

BoardWise's new workflows are another step toward making those procedures more accessible.

Whether someone is attempting to understand the evidence underlying a recent complaint or exploring whether a disciplinary action from years ago may qualify for relief, our goal remains the same: to help licensed professionals navigate complex administrative systems with greater clarity, confidence, and access to information.

The Disciplinary Relief Request and Investigative File Request workflows are now available through BoardWise.

BoardWise provides educational information and document-preparation tools and does not provide legal advice or legal representation. Access to investigative records and eligibility for disciplinary relief depend on applicable laws, jurisdiction-specific procedures, and individual circumstances. BoardWise cannot guarantee disclosure of investigative materials, expungement, sealing, website removal, or any particular outcome. Professionals should consult a qualified attorney when legal advice is needed.
