Governing authority and what the rule requires
Idaho State Board of Social Work Examiners sets the licensure standard for clinical and non-clinical social workers practicing in Idaho. The substantive rule citation is Idaho Code § 54-3201; IDAPA 24.14.01.
Most state boards recognize CE delivered by ASWB Approved Continuing Education (ACE) providers, NASW chapters, CSWE-accredited schools of social work, state social work associations, and other board-listed sponsors. Confirm with the board which providers, delivery formats (live, live-interactive, recorded/home study, distance), and category caps apply to your specific license type (LCSW vs LMSW vs LSW/LBSW) and cycle.
How Idaho social work CE audits typically work
After a renewal cycle, a percentage of licensees are selected for review. Selection is generally random, and being audited is not a finding of wrongdoing. The notice arrives by mail or secure email through the contact information on file with Idaho State Board of Social Work Examiners.
- The notice identifies the audit period and lists the documentation to provide.
- Response windows are usually around 30 days; many boards allow a single short extension if requested in writing before the deadline.
- Reviewers compare your submitted certificates to your attested totals and to any mandated topic categories (ethics, supervision, cultural competency, suicide assessment, child or dependent adult abuse reporting, implicit bias, human trafficking, telehealth, or other content required by board rule).
- Most audits close quietly with a clearance letter when the documentation matches.
- If something is missing, the board typically issues a follow-up letter with a defined window to cure the deficiency.
Documentation commonly requested
Audit notices are usually specific. Read the notice carefully and build a checklist directly from it. The most common items requested for social workers include:
- Certificates of completion for every CE activity claimed during the cycle.
- Each certificate should clearly show: your name as it appears on your license, the sponsor and its approval/accreditation (ASWB ACE provider number, NASW chapter, CSWE-accredited program, state association, or board-approved provider), the course title, the date(s) completed, the number of CE hours awarded, and the content category.
- Documentation for any mandated topics (ethics, supervision, cultural competency/diversity, implicit bias, suicide assessment, child or dependent adult abuse reporting, human trafficking, telehealth, jurisprudence, and any state-mandated public health priority topics).
- A personal CE log or spreadsheet mapping each activity to the cycle, hour total, category, and delivery format (live vs distance/self-study).
- Documentation for any teaching, publication, formal supervision provided, graduate coursework, ASWB exam preparation, or other alternative credit used to satisfy any portion of the requirement.
Idaho-specific content to watch for
Idaho's rule on CE for social workers is set out at Idaho Code § 54-3201; IDAPA 24.14.01. The current expectation is: 20 hours of continuing education per year for LCSW, LMSW, and LSW, reported at annual renewal.
Mandated content to watch for: 4 hours ethics; suicide assessment training one-time.
Confirm the current cycle-specific subtotals with Idaho State Board of Social Work Examiners before you submit. Mandated topic areas (ethics, supervision, cultural competency, implicit bias, suicide assessment, child abuse reporting, human trafficking, and any state-specific public health priority topics) are revised periodically.
Common pitfalls social workers run into
- Counting CE that was not delivered by an ASWB ACE provider or another board-recognized sponsor.
- Certificates that do not list the ASWB ACE provider number, NASW chapter, or other sponsor approval identifier, or that do not specify the content category (ethics vs general clinical vs supervision, etc.).
- Counting CE earned outside the cycle window, or assuming hours roll over (most states do not allow carryover; a small number permit limited carryover).
- Missing a small but mandatory subject-area requirement (for example, ethics, suicide assessment, cultural competency, child abuse reporting, or human trafficking hours) while easily clearing the total hour count.
- Exceeding category caps on home study, asynchronous online, or independent learning where the state limits those formats.
- Confusing LCSW (clinical) requirements with LMSW or LSW/LBSW (non-clinical) requirements; many states set different totals or different mandated topics for each license tier.
- Assuming CE accepted by another behavioral health board (counseling, MFT, psychology) automatically counts for social work CE.
How to assemble a clean response
Gather your records in one place. A folder on your desktop, a printed binder, or a shared drive all work. You do not need a complicated system. You just need to be able to find things.
Name each PDF with the date, course title, hours, and category (for example, "2024-06-12 NASW Ethics in Telehealth 3.0 hrs ACE.pdf"). Group certificates by category that maps to the board's request: mandated topics first (ethics, supervision, suicide assessment, cultural competency, child abuse reporting), then general clinical hours, then any teaching/publication/supervision provided credit. Add a one-page cover sheet that summarizes total hours by category and points the reviewer to the matching documents.
If your hours fall short
First-time shortfalls are usually handled administratively. The board generally allows a defined window to complete makeup hours and submit updated documentation. Honest, prompt communication is far better than silence.
If the shortfall is significant or repeated, the board may move toward formal action such as fines, probation, or non-renewal. At that point, calm documentation of how you are coming into compliance, plus a written plan to prevent recurrence (calendar reminders, an annual CE planning sheet, or enrollment in an ASWB ACE or NASW package), makes a meaningful difference.
Possible outcomes
- Maintain active social work licensure and the ability to legally practice as an LCSW, LMSW, or LSW/LBSW in Idaho.
- Avoid disciplinary action such as fines, probation, or license suspension for non-compliance.
- Demonstrate that your practice continues to reflect current ethical, clinical, and cultural standards.
- Successfully clear the audit with a clean letter from the board.
A simple audit-response checklist
- 1Read the audit notice slowly. Note the deadline and exact list of documents requested.
- 2Make a simple folder labeled with the cycle dates being audited.
- 3Pull certificates of completion for every CE activity in that cycle.
- 4Match each certificate to the topic area or category your board requires.
- 5Save proof of license renewal and any required attestations.
- 6If a certificate is missing, contact the provider for a duplicate before the deadline.
- 7Scan everything as clean PDFs, named with date and course title.
- 8Submit through the channel the board requests. Keep a copy and a confirmation.
